Finite Element Modeling of Austenitic Stainless Steel Residual Stresses Pipe Girth Welds

چکیده
Three-dimensional finite element modeling of residual stresses in a girth-welded pipe is presented in this paper, with an emphasis on modeling procedures for the global residual stress characteristics. The shell element model with a heat source moving along the circumferential joint is demonstrated to be cost effective and capable of predicting the global residual stress features. Transient residual stress behaviors near the weld start and stop locations are discussed. The effects of pipe wall thickness and welding speed on residual stresses also are presented in this paper.

Assessment of Numerical Procedures for Residual Stress Analysis of Multipass Welds
Two-dimensional finite element modeling procedures are addressed to predict the residual stresses for multipass welds. A generalized plane strain model with a five-pass weld in a plate and an axisymmetric model with a six-pass girth weld in a pipe are considered. Element rebirth and pass-lumping techniques are employed in both models. The combined heat input using surface and body flux componen...
متن کاملExperimental Study of the Residual Stresses in Girth Weld of Natural Gas Transmission Pipeline
In order to achieve integrated condition in the girth welding of high pressure natural gas transmission pipelines, the weld zones and its surrounding area should have good mechanical properties. Residual stresses are an important defect especially in the girth welding of the pipeline. In this study, two API X70 steel pipes (with spiral seam weld) of 56 inches outside diameter and 0.780 inch wal...
متن کاملWelding residual stresses in ferritic power plant steels
Many of the degradation mechanisms relevant to power plant components can be exacerbated by stresses that reside within the material. Good design or structural integrity assessments require therefore, an accounting of residual stresses, which often are introduced during welding. To do this it is necessary to characterise the stresses, but this may not be possible in thick components using non-d...
متن کاملUltrasonic Propagation in Austenitic Stainless Steel Welds - Approximate Model and Numerical Methods Results and Comparison with Experiments
Ultrasonic testing of austenitic stainless steel welds is often difficult because the ultrasonic beam is subjected to many perturbations : deviation, partition, distortions and sometimes ghost echoes. These perturbations are due to the anisotropic and heterogeneous metallurgical structure of the welds. We are carrying out a research program in order to evaluate the influence of the main paramet...
متن کاملSimulation and modeling of friction welding of stainless steel to aluminum alloy using finite element method and artificial neural network
Aluminum to stainless steel joints are broadly used in industries in order to reduce fuel consumption. While fusion welding is not a suitable method to join these metals. solid state welding, like friction welding (FW), is an effective way to this process. However, risk of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) formation is probable in these welds. In previews investigations formation of FeAl3, Fe2Al5 ...
